Malaysia will not actively take sides in a tussle between major powers. However, it does not mean Malaysia will not take a position if it feels its values, beliefs and interests are at stake. Malaysia cannot remain neutral on matters that involve fundamental rights such as the Palestinian cause, or on matters relating to its interests such as its territorial and maritime claims in the South China Sea.
Malaysia will continue to support international laws and norms, as a world that is not guided by international laws and norms will be one where might makes right.
While certain structures and norms in the international system are unbalanced, Malaysia is committed to working for a more equitable system for all countries.
Human rights are an increasingly important aspect of Malaysian society.
There are still many challenges to finding consensus on certain issues, but the government is resolute in making human rights an important agenda both domestically and internationally.
